When The Morning Comes in Overtown
Directors – Alexis Caputo
Director of Photography – Jackson Petit
When The Morning Comes in Overtown, is a documentary film about the historic Overtown community and NBA champion and former Miami Heat basketball player, Alonzo Mourning’s Overtown Youth Center. Guided by Executive Director, Tina Brown, the not-for-profit organization is an integral part of the community serving inner city youth.
The center’s mission is to inspire and empower youth and families by fostering hope through enrichment services. It’s vision exposes youth to numerous resources and opportunities that aid their educational and social development. They ultimately become positive contributing citizens. It’s main goal is to be an integral part of the community promoting lifelong learning and success for inner-city youth and citizens. In addition, it seeks to build resilient children living in an environment loaded with risk factors, yet still grow into competent and productive members of society.
Art as education and activism is a viable way to access marginalized populations, particularly inner city and impoverished youth. The youth in the film not only demonstrate the value of arts in education, they emerge as brave voices portraying hope and resilience. These are the markers the Overtown Youth Center strives to bestow in them. We have labored with integrity to not only capture this essence, but to share it with the Overtown community and the world. – Alexis Caputo
Becoming a Part of Sacred Spaces – Sacred Places
Producer/Director – Alexis Caputo
Director of Photography – Jackson Petit
Becoming a Part of Sacred Spaces was filmed at Clifton Heritage National Park, Nassau, Bahamas with site installation by Antonius Roberts. Sacred Spaces is a historical place, not only for the Bahamas, but in the world. It marks the historical context of a wicked past rooted from slavery.
As Africans living in the diaspora, we have honored the struggles and sacrifices of our ancestors, and documented them in various ways. The erection of Sacred Spaces, is one such. I am honored to be a part of a rich and royal heritage continuum. – Alexis Caputo
Becoming a Part of Sacred Spaces is a documentary project made possible by an international grant from the National Performance Network, Performing Americas Progam, and LA RED de Promotores Culturales de Latinomerica y el Caribe. The co-presenting partner of this project is Diaspora Vibe Cultural Arts Incubator. The film project was produced in an international residency solely with the grant host and community partner Antonius Roberts Studio & Gallery at Hillside House, Nassau, Bahamas.
